Program 2023, Basilica di S. Fedele, Como

The location

The magnificent Romanesque-style basilica stands on the homonymous piazza, in the centre of the walled city. This area has a very rich historical and archaeological stratification. The façade, partly concealed by an adjoining residential building, is a neo-Romanesque reconstruction from 1914, but preserves the Renaissance Rose window in the centre, from the original façade dating back to 1509. On the left side rises the soaring bell tower, composed of parts built in different historical periods. The interior of the basilica has a Latin Cross plan, with a hall divided into three naves of four bays each with high women’s galleries. It is worth mentioning the organ of San Fedele, one of the best in the Como area: the work of the Mascioni Company of Cuvio, it was built in 1941 with materials from an organ built in 1827 by the Prestinari brothers, and is now used for notable musical concerts.
