The location

Forte di Fuentes Forte di Fuentes is a 17th-century Spanish military architectural complex, located on the heights of East Montecchio, in the expanse of the Pian di Spagna, at the gateway to Valtellina.

Built by the Spanish in the early 17th century to control the Alpine passes, it later fell under Austrian control and, after a period of neglect and decline, its destruction was ordered in 1796, when Napoleon triumphantly entered Milan.

The remains are one of the few examples of the Spanish domination: once through the Main Gate, the imposing Piazza d’Armi housed the Governor’s palace, water cisterns, underground storerooms, soldiers’ quarters and the church dedicated to Santa Barbara.

Restoration work began in the 1990s to secure the structures that have survived to this day.
